Sigur Rós – An Icelandic Band for the Peaceful at Heart

Active since 1994, Sigur Rós is a post-rock band that originated in Reykjavik. Frontman Jónsi Birgisson, bassist Georg Hólm and drummer Orri Páll Dýrason, make up this group that creates sweet, melodic, peaceful songs, very true to the Icelandic atmosphere. Their songs are known to have minimal elements, and they tend to experiment a lot with different sorts of musical instruments.

So far, they have released seven albums, each being a mixture of dream pop, experimental rock and ambient music. Indeed, the songs they make really do contain that tone of ambience and serenity. Even their music videos never cease to inspire these themes. Icelandic mountains, the snow, water, etc. are all very common elements in Sigur Rós videos.

The band has had a lot of recognition over the many years of their practice. From collaborations with the likes of Radiohead, to being featured in award-winning movies, these creative Icelandic folks are moving forward, fast. They have performed at various large events, enlivened concerts and really flaunted their talents for the fans. A documentary was brought out in 2007, called “Heima”, depicting their Summer tour in Iceland. The shows the members performing and talking about their inspirations. But mostly, it relates the story of how the artists are inspired and moved, to create their music, by the natural elements their homeland provides.

You may not understand the lyrics of the songs but the messages the band is trying to convey is quite clear in the music itself. Each song creates different moods and their live performances are worth crossing continents for. Try out their music, give an album a listen and see if their calming, soft tunes can pull at your heartstrings too.
